Farm In The Valley

I just finished this painting of a cozy farm snuggled into the shadows of the Mohonk Mountain Ridge. I like the way the light comes across the valley, giving a warm glow to a snow covered scene.

My latest painting is titled, Coleman: Generous, Suave and Strong. It is a portrait of my daughter's long-time friend and companion who passed away a little over a year ago. He will long live in the memory of all who were fortunate to know him. I can't say enough about how special he was.

Yet Another Snow Painting

Spring is here, but I had to do another snow painting. I wanted to evoke the feeling of a house in a snow storm. Closed up against the cold and very cozy. The house invites you to come in and get warm.

Something Different For My Latest Painting

This painting I am calling The Lovers. I painted it for show at ASK (Art Society of Kingston) titled The Great Tulip Scanal. It will be on exhibit May 2 - 20, 2009. This show invites painters and photographers to display the beauty of the (now common) tulip, Dutch culture, or any link to the tulip craze. This theme is especially pertinent during this year's 400th celebration of Henry Hudson and the Dutch exploration of the New World.

New Painting: Clearwater

I completed this painting just in time for the next show at the Arts Society of Kingston (ASK). The theme of the show is "Contemporary Hudson". This is a painting of the Clearwater, a sloop built by Pete Seager to call attention to his unrelenting efforts to clean up the Hudson River. So, while it looks old, it is relatively new.

I am surprised . . .

I am surprised by people's reactions to my paintings. They like how real looking they are. I like that I can set a mood that is gentle, lonely and inviting at the same time. I use acrylic and challenge myself to render the light and shadows with the same facility as I would have with oils. I use glazing the way I would with oils. After pursuing abstractions my whole life, I didn't think I would enjoy painting realism as much as I do.
The Hudson Valley might have something to do with it. Or, maybe it is my age.
